Changing domain name from IP address (while initial setup) to new domain name (example.com)

I installed a ee website using IP address in the initial setup. Now wanting to change it to domain name , say example.com. I tried this tutorial from this forum. But when i run the final ee site enable example.com I get the following error site example.com does not exist How should i safely move from xx.xx.xx.xx to example.com with least downtime. Also want to enable ssl in future so that too.

Also tried this. Nothing seems to change. Still the nginx landing page.
